Pinwheels for Peace

Friday was International Day of Peace. In celebration of this day my little sweeties and I read the story Faithful Elephants by Yukio Tsuchiya.

This is a sad story but really brings a perspective of war that kids can understand. This story takes place in Japan during world war II and the bombings of Japan. The zoo keepers had to kill the animals of the zoo for fear that it would be bombed and dangerous animals would be freed from their cages. Three elephants, Tonky, Wanly and John have a story to tell and do not go down without a fight.

After reading this story students responded by writing about their feelings toward war, peace and tolerance for others.

I was so impressed by the thoughtfulness students put into this piece.

Later we each made Pinwheels in demonstration of “Whirled Peace”.

You can learn more about this movement by clicking the picture below. On this day of peace people all around the “whirled” create pinwheels and display them in support of peace.
